How Hot Should a Sauna Be?
Ideal temperature ranges for beginners and traditional use, with protocol recommendations.
Traditional Sauna Temperature Ranges
Traditional saunas typically run between 150°F and 195°F (65–90°C). Most users find 175–190°F (80–88°C) comfortable for sustained sessions. Higher temps are common in Finnish-style sauna; lower ranges suit beginners. The Finnish cohort studies that link sauna use to cardiovascular outcomes typically used 80–90°C (176–194°F) and 15–20 minute sessions (e.g. Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015 ). We cover recommended sauna temperature ranges and why they matter.
Infrared vs Ambient Heat
Infrared cabins use lower ambient temperatures with radiant heat warming the body directly. If you're comparing heat types, see our infrared vs traditional guide; for health context, see sauna health benefits.
Session Length & Protocol
Session length and cool-down matter as much as temperature. For evidence-based guidance on how long to stay in the sauna, see our session duration guide; for how often to go, see sauna frequency. We'll outline full protocol recommendations for beginners and regular users. Content expanding soon.
