Welcome to The Sauna Boss
The Sauna Boss·
A guide to hotness
If you're here, you probably already feel it: sauna isn't just "a hot room." It's a ritual. A reset button. A culture. A craft. A little bit of ancient tradition and a little bit of modern obsession — sweat-as-therapy, heat-as-training, calm-as-a-skill.
This is the first post of The Sauna Boss, and it's my way of planting a flag: I'm going all in on sauna — the science, the build, the culture, and the practice — and I'm bringing you with me.
Who I Am (and Why I'm Doing This)
I'm the kind of person who can't casually like something. If I'm into it, I'm in it. I learn the history. I test the routines. I read the studies. I talk to builders. I look at heater specs the way some people look at sports stats. I want the why, not just the vibe.
Sauna grabbed me because it sits at the intersection of everything I care about:
- Health — what it does to your heart, your sleep, your stress, your recovery
- Design and craft — wood, heat, airflow, insulation, moisture, layout, real engineering
- Culture and ritual — Finland, banyas, sento culture, modern sauna revival
- Self-mastery — consistency, breath, discomfort training, stillness
And honestly? The world is loud. Sauna is one of the rare places where it gets quiet — physically and mentally. I don't think that's a small thing anymore. I think it might be the whole point.
What The Sauna Boss Will Be About
This Substack is going to be a mix of deep research and practical guidance, written for people who want more than surface-level "sauna is good for you" content.
Here's what you can expect:
Sauna Science, Without the Nonsense
There's real research on sauna — especially around cardiovascular health and mortality correlations, heat adaptation, stress resilience, and recovery. There's also a lot of hype.
I'm going to do the work of separating what's strongly supported, what's promising but early, and what's just influencer fog.
And I'll write it in normal human language. No wellness poetry. No cherry-picked miracles.
How to Sauna (the Practice)
Sauna isn't one thing. Temperature, duration, humidity, pacing, cold exposure, hydration, timing, frequency — these change the experience completely.
We'll cover:
- Beginner protocols (so you don't feel wrecked)
- Performance and recovery protocols
- Sleep and stress protocols
- How to build consistency without turning it into a chore
- What to do if you hate it at first (many people do)
Build Guides: DIY to Dream Setups
I'm going to get nerdy here — in the best way.
Expect posts like:
- Infrared vs traditional: what's actually different?
- Heater sizing, ventilation, and why "hot enough" isn't the same as "good sauna"
- Layout planning (bench height, volume, door placement)
- Materials and safety (woods, vapor barriers, insulation, electrical)
- Modular kits vs custom builds
- Budget builds that don't cut corners where it matters
Whether you want a simple backyard box or a full-on cabin sauna, we'll make it feel doable.
Sauna Culture and the "Why" Behind It
Sauna culture is rich — especially Finnish sauna traditions — and it's also evolving fast in the U.S.
I want to explore:
- The etiquette
- The rituals
- The stories
- The places
- The difference between "a hot room" and sauna as a way of life
Reviews, Checklists, and Gear That Actually Matters
Not everything needs to be optimized. But a few things really do matter.
I'll do practical breakdowns like:
- Best beginner sauna accessories (and what's a waste)
- Thermometers and hygrometers that aren't lying to you
- Buckets, ladles, stones, towels, lighting, scents — done tastefully
- What to look for if you're buying a kit or booking a sauna space
My Philosophy: Sauna Is Simple... but Not Shallow
At the end of the day, sauna is not complicated: you get hot, you cool down, you repeat, you leave better than you arrived.
But it is deep. And that depth is what I want to explore: the physiological change, the mental clarity, the craft of a well-built room, the feeling of stepping outside into cold air and realizing you can breathe again.
The Sauna Boss is for people who are curious but intimidated, people who already sauna and want to go deeper, people who want to build one, and people who want the research and the culture.
If that's you, you're in the right place.
What's Coming Next
Here are a few of the first posts I'm planning:
- Sauna 101: what makes a "real" sauna (heat, humidity, airflow, and why it matters)
- The science roundup: what the best research actually suggests (and what it doesn't)
- Beginner protocol: a 2-week plan that won't destroy you
- DIY build starter pack: choosing a heater, sizing the room, avoiding the common mistakes
- Sauna + cold: how to do contrast therapy without making it a personality
Welcome to The Sauna Boss. Let's get hot, on purpose.
